A recorder is a small instrument that comes in a variety of colors, sizes, and styles.

Here is a snippet of Mrs. Young's class playing their very first song!

I also found this video that I thought you might enjoy!!

And,  I think Mrs. Stahl needs this shirt!

Music Centers

It's what we've waited for all year!  Music Centers!

Each year we have music centers in the first 2 weeks of May.  Its a super fun way to spend music class.  And, you get to participate in activities that we usually can't!

Here are a few pics from this year's Centers.

Recorder Karate - Black Belts already?!?!

Every January, 4th and 5th grade students begin Recorder Karate.

In Recorder Karate, students must learn 9 songs.  Each song is a little more difficult than the previous one.  Each song is assigned a color, and when they can play the song for me without error, they earn that color of belt (string to tie around their recorder).

They also get to sign their name on the corresponding poster on the wall.

This is the 3rd week of Recorder Karate.   And, we already have 3 BLACK BELTS!!!!!  The 3rd week!!!  THIRD!!

One is a 4th Grader (who has never done Recorder Karate before), and the other two are 5th graders.  However, this year's songs are not the same ones they played last year.  So, they had to learn 9 new songs.

I am so incredibly proud of the these hard working girls.  They did this with NO help from me.  They practiced at home and came in a played all of the songs for me!  Way to go!!

Did I mention that it is only the 3rd week of Recorder Karate?!?!

Name That Tune!

This week in music, 5th graders did an activity called Name That Tune.  They were given this:

First, they had to name all of the notes.  (we've been working hard to learn the Treble Clef notes)

Then, they chose a partner and an instrument.  They played each line on the xylophone and then guessed the name of the song!  They did great!!  I'm so proud of these musicians!!!

Camille Saint- Saens

This month, we have been learning about the Camille Saint-Saens.  He is the Musician of the Month.

He was born in 1835 and died in 1921. He was a composer, conductor, teacher, and a child prodigy! His most famous work was The Carnival of the Animals.

We have also been learning about Instrument Familes.  Second graders were hard at work on a "cut and paste" activity.  Students had to cut out the instruments and glue them into their family!

Worms!

Each week in Kindergarten, we learn a song for a letter of the alphabet.  This week we are on W!  And the song is Worms!  We listened to the song, learned the words, and then we sang the song.  THEN . . . we ATE worms!

Well, they were actually gummy worms!  :)
